This strategic clinical pharmacist position is part of a dynamic team and responsible for providing pharmacy consultative sales and account management clinical support for commercial employer groups. This position will work in collaboration with the Pharmacy Consultation Sales team, Sales, Marketing and Medical Directors, acting as a consultant to interpret and apply pharmacy and healthcare market trends to create strategically competitive benefits and program offerings. The Pharmacist is highly visible to internal leadership within PHE, Marketing and Sales in addition to frequent interactions with external brokers and specific employer groups (Key and Large accounts).

Essential Accountabilities:

  • Interpret pharmacy utilization trends to offer recommendations and solutions to employer groups.
  • Participates in employer retention efforts such as annual or quarterly plan utilization review meetings, routine employer account management meetings, presenting and recommending pharmacy program strategies, participating within internal work groups in developing or enhancing programs, products or reporting (among others).
  • Participates in Finalist Presentations for new and existing employer groups and offers insight on clinical programs available to the group.
  • Evaluate pharmacy industry and market events and application to employer group utilization and/or cost trends, assess and apply clinical literature, effectively build and cultivate relationships with employers, consultant partners and internal stakeholders.
  • Provide consultative support for new sales opportunities and ensure successful clinical program implementation for new employer’s pharmacy benefits. Works closely with the Pharmacy Consultation team and Pharmacy Solutions leadership to identify improvement opportunities and educational strategies for the sales team and employer groups.
  • Supports the Medical Directors with review of employer group high-cost claimants and provides insight on medication related opportunities. Actively monitors the drug pipeline and provides education to both key internal and external contacts as it relates to future trends and opportunities.
  • Analyzes profiles of assigned accounts, reviews clinical issues affecting performance, opportunities for improvement, and highlights strategies to improve performance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pharmacy bachelor’s degree or doctoral level (Pharm.D) degree with Current New York State Pharmacist and a minimum of 3 years of managed care pharmacy experience or 3 years of consulting experience in the pharmacy benefits industry (completion of managed care residency can substitute for 4 years of experience requirements).
  • Knowledge of pharmacy benefits products, services and concepts. Strong clinical knowledge kept current through continuing education and professional affiliations.
  • Extensive knowledge of innovative managed care pharmacy programs and a proven clinical track record of developing cost-effective, high-quality programs will be given priority. Maintains confidentiality and uses only the minimum amount of protected health information (PHI) necessary to accomplish job related responsibilities.
  • Analytical skills including developing reports and synthesizing data to tell a story and develop recommendations. Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Vizio) and various clinical/business databases.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including developing presentations and presenting to external business leaders or large audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal, consultative, customer service, relationship building, and problem-solving skills. Collaboration skills to work across organization on problem resolution, negotiation, consensus building, conflict management, and decision-making skills.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work prolonged periods sitting and/or standing at a workstation and working on a computer.
  • Ability to work while sitting and/or standing at a workstation viewing a computer and using a keyboard, mouse and/or phone for three (3) or more hours at a time.
  • Ability to work in a home office for continuous periods of time for business continuity.
  • Ability to travel across the Health Plan service region for meetings and/or trainings as needed.
  • The ability to hear, understand, and speak clearly while using a phone, with or without a headset.
